Situated in Kajaani in an old UPM factory hall, LUMI supercomputer is one of the fastest in the world. The overall project including the triangulated envelope showcasing the supercomputer was designed by Synopsis Architects.
Geometria Architecture Ltd was asked to manage the design and fabrication of the complex envelope. Featuring complex multi-faceted aluminum composite sheets, non-orthogonal and view-oriented window tubing, and form-driven perforation.
Windows into the interior space are defined by triangular openings on the outer envelope. Because the envelope is further away from the box surface, each opening is “extruded” towards key locations along the visitors’ pathway.
Geometria Architecture Ltd has developed a set of bespoke algorithmic tools in order to realise the complex envelope. And of course, fabrication is based on digital material.
